Strong Women, Strong Marriages: Ambition Without Erosion at Home
Ambitious women are told to choose. The ones who build both do it on purpose, with structure rather than hope.

The assumption is persistent: a woman who builds something significant will do it at her marriage's expense. Plenty of women over 50 have watched it happen and drawn conclusions.
But the failures are rarely caused by ambition itself. They are caused by ambition operating without agreement.
Make the arrangement explicit
Most couples never actually negotiate the terms of a demanding season. They drift into it and then resent the results. Have the conversation on purpose.
- What is the season, and roughly how long is it?
- What is the objective, and what does success look like?
- What does the household need in order to function while it runs?
- What is protected regardless — which nights, which trips, which commitments?
Resentment is almost always the interest payment on an agreement that was never actually made.
Structure that holds
- A weekly business meeting about money, calendars, and logistics, separate from connection time.
- Protected time that is genuinely protected, on the calendar like a client.
- Explicit appreciation for the partner absorbing the load in a heavy season.
- A reciprocity plan. Seasons should trade.
What does not work
Shrinking yourself to reduce friction. It works briefly and costs enormously — the ambition does not disappear, it just goes underground and comes back as bitterness a decade later.
A marriage that can hold two ambitious people is not luck. It is built, the same way anything durable is built: on stated terms, kept promises, and regular maintenance.
